The American Statistical Association (ASA) is a scientific and educational society founded in 1839 with the following mission: To promote excellence in the application of statistical science across the wealth of human endeavor. ASA is dedicated to promoting excellence in research, education, development, and the use of statistics, and is the second oldest professional association in the United States.
ASA's commitment is to provide the link between the profession of statistics and the society it serves. ASA's 16,000 members here and abroad serve in industry, academia, and government agencies, both nationally and internationally.
Through subject area Sections and professional experiences, members apply their expertise to diverse and vital areas including the following:

 | Research in medicine |
 | Quality assurance in industry |
 | Examination of social issues |
 | Economic forecasting and analytic research in business |
 | Expansion of statistical methods and computer and graphics applications |
ASA publishes nine journals, a combined CD-ROM for all Joint Statistical Meetings proceedings, the Current Index to Statistics, a variety of subject area Section newsletters and geographic area Chapter newsletters, a monthly membership magazine, Amstat News, two general interest magazines, CHANCE and STATS, brochures, career information, and other outreach publications.
Additionally, ASA manages the annual Joint Statistical Meetings, held with the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, two divisions of the International Biometric Society, and the Statistical Society of Canada, as well as topical and regionally based conferences. The ASA has an active professional education program and many educational outreach efforts with sister societies.
